Collaborative Classroom - We Need Tables! DONORS... →
Our classroom is TINY! We have huge, broken tables that take up most of the room. Their size is prohibitive and we have very little room to move around and complete activities. Most activities… My students need 8 sturdy tables to complete collaborative projects and daily assignments throughout the school year.
Lovely education people, please consider donating to my Donors Choose project for...

Summer Plans
I had a lovely summer planned, relaxing and productive. But now, now I have FOUR WEEKS of mandatory professional development with my new job. FOUR! That’s half the summer. Blech.

"You used to be my teacher!"
I walked into Target today to buy things I legitimately needed and search for things I did not. Halfway down the spices isle I heard, “Mrs. B, you used to be my teacher!” I turned and stared trying to place the young woman before me. She was barely over five feet, covered in piercings, and wearing mostly black… and then I remembered. She was a bright, doesn’t take shit from...

Husband
Several 6th graders to know more about my husband during lunch today...
Student 1: Mrs. B, do you like your husband?
Student 2: Do you think he's cute?!
Me: I love my husband and I do think he's cute.
Student 3: What does he look like?
Student 4: I bet he looks like a philosopher
Student 1: Or Indiana Jones! Does he like snakes?
Student 2: He probably looks like a tall surfer with curly blond hair
Student 3: No, no, he's super buff!
Me: He's tall, 6'1, with dark hair and glasses
Student 2: Did he ever surf?
Me: Yes, when he lived in Brazil and Hawaii
Student 2: I knew it!
Student 1: What does he do?
Me: He works for the Colorado General Assembly.
Student 1: So he IS like Indiana Jones.
Me: Um, not really but sure.

55 gentle ways to take care of yourself when... →
We all have times in our lives when we just have too much stuff going on. There are always deadlines, exams, due dates and just too many priorities to juggle. And when everything is going wrong, the world is screaming for your attention and you just don’t have time - the last thing you need to hear is to “just take a day off”. So here are 55 gentle ways you can take care of yourself when...

The Poop on Lewis and Clark →
Given that their diet consisted largely of dried strips of wild animal meat, they also popped pills for constipation. They called the pills “thunderclappers.” Their real name was “Dr. Rush’s Bilious Pills.” (Benjamin Rush was a famous doctor at the time of the American Revolution, and signed the Declaration of Independence.) Thunderclappers were high-octane laxatives, made of 60 percent mercury....

Completed my first child abuse report...
last week. Filled out the form and contacted the child abuse hotline. Our school psychologist informed me that I’ll probably get a letter in a month saying that no action was taken because the child did not have any visible physical marks. My heart sank.
What’s more horrifying than the thought of a person harming a child is the fact that our local newspaper is “uncovering”...

I have long been a huge fan of using games in the classroom. Much like sneaking broccoli into the pizza sauce, I have always felt that games were that perfect balance of teaching and engagement. When I first started, my consummate go to was Jeopardy but….. Holy work Batman! Setting that all up was extremely time consuming. I wanted to find a way to have a...

My classroom is surrounded by 8th and 9th graders lockers. Whenever I step out into the hallway I invariably see at least one couple making out a few feet away. Wish I could squirt them with a spray bottle much like one would with a pet on the furniture.

Do you remember when...
I was all about being a #fit teacher last year?!?! Well, it’s time to revive that goal and stick to it permanently. I am incredibly good at making excuses for myself and avoiding healthy food/proper portions/exercise/etc… who isn’t? So much so that I gained back 8 of the 10 lbs. I lost.
Now now, I know 8 lbs. isn’t cause for alarm for many people but it means going up a...

We have three months left in the 2012-2013 school year but I’m already thinking about 2013-2014! I can’t help but look ahead. As I continue to grow and reflect on my practice I am more aware of the needs of my students. My updated amazon wishlist highlights a few items needed most in my classroom.

Interview
Interviewing for THE job this week. I am currently employed as a contract teacher (less money & one year contract stints) and do not yet work for the district.
If I get the position (at same school) my salary increases, I DON’T need to re-apply/re-interview each year, and I receive better benefits.
