Anonymous asked: Hi, I just read your late work policy. Pertaining to the high school policies, that just seems a little harsh. I'm currently taking my undergrad and none of my professors even penalize us that much. I mean don't get me wrong, 50% could cause your students to strive more to complete their homework, but at the same time not all students are the same, theres always some students who tend to slack off a little bit. I'm not saying go too easy on them, but maybe deduct 15 or 20% instead of a whole 50%
I was waiting for this! You’re right though, it does seem harsh, doesn’t it?! I’ve used this policy before (with high school only) and it has worked out very well. Here’s the thing, I give students time in class to complete work. Most, if not all students do the work in class and have little or no homework as a result. On top of that we’re on a block schedule so I see classes every other day (giving them a little more time to get stuff done.) Additionally, I try to get to know my students as much as reasonably possible. I tell them to self-advocate and talk to me if they’re having an issue (in or out of class.) I’m not unreasonable and certainly can be flexible if they clue me into whatever’s on their plate and need an extension.
Hope this helps clarify my policy - context matters!
