Do You Think it’s Fair?

Do you think it’s fair or right to assess students weekly verbal participation points? I have a very introverted senior with a very vocal mother who wants me to assess her child in another way that doesn’t involve speaking in front of the class. Here’s where I struggle, the class is largely discussion based and while I recognize that’s not everyone’s style I do think it’s an important skill, introvert or not. I give students time to gather and write down their thoughts so they have something to say. Furthermore, I give points for asking questions and engaging in anyway verbally during a discussion. Thoughts?

grayer answered: I’m very introverted, but I still have to communicate with peers. If speaking is a standard, you have to assess it.
leftlaceuntied answered: If you allow them to write their thoughts and take notes in the discussion you could collect that for partial/full credit instead.
monasequeda answered: could you also do small group discussions and assess her during those? So it’s not ALL large group discussion?
rislachius answered: people need to learn to communicate effectively once they enter “the adult world” & they won’t be excused because they’re introverted.
helenrogerson80 answered: You may have to find some strategies to support the student open up more. I agree though, they must make verbal contributions.
kdev0r answered: I use the trick of checking that student’s answers, pointing to one and tell (not ask) them to share it, like it’s going to help ME out.

misshasclass answered: I had plenty of uni classes that assessed me on participation in tutorials (10%-15% of final grade, usually). I’d insist.

renhark answered: Speaking as an introvert who has felt this way in a multitude of classes, as long as the points didnt make or break my grade I was ok with it
musicalbunny18 answered: As long as the points for speaking aren’t make or break then it’s ok. As an introvert, I’d hate it, but it’s a vital skill.
everyfiredies answered: If it’s an essential standard you need to meet, then stick to your guns. I don’t assess weekly, but have many discussions. It’s IMPORTANT! :)

baileycanteach answered: I mean, you give the students enough time to access their thoughts and maybe he should write down what he is going to stay before he says it.
wonderfulslumber answered: i didn’t speak in class until grad school…i say just judge them on peer verbal interactions and their written personal views/opinions.
